Terms of use

Using this site

By reading this site you agree to these terms. They are short and meant to be read. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site.

Shiv Puran is a free reading guide to the Shiv Puran and to Lord Shiva's teachings, offered as seva, a service to readers. It is an independent project. It is not an official edition of the Shiv Puran, it is not affiliated with any temple, organisation, or publisher, and it is not a religious authority. For the full picture, see the About page.

Our original text

The retellings, explanations, and other writing on this site are our own words. We keep the rights in that wording. You are welcome to:

  • read it, print it, and share it (a link, or a printed copy for yourself, a class, or a study group) for personal, educational, or devotional use;
  • quote short passages, as long as you name this site, Shiv Puran, and link back to the page you took them from.

Please do not republish whole pages or large parts of the site (for example on another website, in an app, or in a printed publication), or use them for any commercial purpose, without asking first. You can ask through the contact page. We have not chosen a formal open licence for the text, so this page is the whole of what we allow.

What is not ours to restrict stays free. The Sanskrit of the ancient texts belongs to everyone. The translations and other works we cite belong to their authors and publishers, and some are still under copyright. We claim no rights in them. Our rights cover only our own wording and arrangement.

Art and images

The paintings and prints on this site are classical Indian art that is in the public domain or released under a CC0 dedication by the museum that holds it. Every image is credited, with its artist or origin, licence, and source link, in the image credits on the About page, and larger images also carry a caption. Because these works are not ours, we claim no rights in them.

Videos

The Videos page shows a 64-part reading of the Shiv Puran made by the YouTube channel Ekta Kes (opens in a new tab). The videos belong to their creators. We do not own them, and we have no connection with the channel. They play through YouTube's embedded player, so when you watch them, YouTube's own terms of service and privacy policy apply to you. We cannot change or control what appears in a video, or whether it stays available.

Some pages link to other websites, such as the sources we cite. We do not run those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, or privacy practices. A link is not an endorsement.

Accuracy, and what this site is not

Every story, mantra, and teaching is checked against the text it cites before it is published, and we aim to correct mistakes when we learn of them. Even so, we cannot promise that any page is free of error, and the site is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. For anything that matters, please read the cited source yourself.

This site is for reading and devotion. It does not give medical, legal, financial, or astrological advice. Mantras, stories, and teachings are shown for study and reflection, and we make no promise about any physical, material, or spiritual result from chanting, reading, or following them. If you have a health concern, please speak to a qualified professional.

Limits on our responsibility

You use the site at your own risk. To the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for any loss or harm that comes from using the site, relying on its content, or being unable to reach it. We may change, pause, or remove pages at any time.

Reporting a mistake

If you find an error, such as a wrong chapter number, a name, or a line that does not match the text, please tell us on the contact page. Say which page it is on and, if you can, which passage you checked. Each correction is checked against the source before a page is changed.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site grows. The date at the top of this page shows when these terms last changed. Using the site after a change means you accept the new version.
